EMDR

What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
It is a psychotherapeutic technique that can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress. It is usually used in conjunction with other traditional methods of therapy.
In using this technique, a therapist may use one or more of various EMDR techniques       ( right/left eye movements, tactile tapping or bilateral ear sounds) but all techniques activate opposite sides of the brain to release emotional experiences that are ‘trapped’ in the nervous system.
While this description might sound strange to you, it is actually very simple and easy. Don’t discount it too quickly.  It is a quick and effective means of  releasing emotional pain.

How does it work?
After taking a detailed history and setting goals with the client, the therapist works gently with him/her to revisit a traumatic moment or incident and identifies any negative thoughts, feelings or memories associated with the incident. As the client experiences bilateral stimulation in the presence of a negative memory, there is a gradual resolution of negative feelings resulting in an inner sensation of peace and an internal knowing that the incident has been resolved.

What symptoms can be helped by EMDR?

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?
There are a number of factors to consider in determining if EMDR is right for you. During your initial assessment, all relevant factors will be discussed in full so that you can make a knowledgeable decision about moving forward with EMDR. There are always other alternative therapies should you decide against EMDR.
