Is My Child Just Going Through a Phase, or Could Child Therapy Help?

Wondering if your child is just going through a phase? Learn the signs your child may benefit from child therapy in Kingston, Belleville, or virtually.

Every parent asks this question at some point: is this just a phase, or is something more going on?

Kids go through stages. Moods shift, habits change, and most ups and downs sort themselves out with time, patience, and a little extra love. But sometimes what looks like “just a phase” is actually your child’s way of showing you they’re struggling with something they don’t yet have the words for, and that’s where child therapy can help.

If you’ve found yourself Googling or up late at night asking AI questions…trust your instinct. You know your child best, and if something feels different, it’s worth paying attention to.

Signs Your Child May Be Struggling

Children don’t always tell us when something is wrong. Instead, they show us through behaviour, mood, sleep, and the way they engage with the world around them.

Here are some of the most common signs parents notice before looking into counselling for kids.

Anxiety and worry. This can look like excessive fear, trouble separating from you, constant reassurance-seeking, or physical complaints like stomachaches and headaches that don’t have a clear medical cause. When worry starts running the show, child anxiety therapy can give your child tools to manage it.

Emotional regulation struggles. Big meltdowns, sudden tears, or explosive anger that seems out of proportion to what triggered it can signal that your child hasn’t yet developed the tools to manage what they’re feeling.

Behavioural changes. A once easygoing child becoming defiant, withdrawn, or unusually clingy is often a sign that something beneath the surface needs attention.

Difficulty with transitions. Life changes like a new school, a move, a separation or divorce, the arrival of a sibling, or the loss of a loved one can be genuinely hard for kids to process, even when they seem “fine” on the outside.

Communication challenges. Some children pull inward, becoming quiet or hard to reach. Others struggle to name their feelings altogether and instead show them through their bodies or their behaviour.

Other signs to watch for: a loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy, changes in sleep, avoiding school or friends, a drop in academic performance, or perfectionism and fear of making mistakes.

Any one of these on its own might just be a phase. But when several show up together, or last longer than you’d expect, it may be time to look a little closer, and a child therapist can help you tell the difference.

Why These Signs Matter More Than “Bad Behaviour”

It’s easy to focus on the behaviour itself, the tantrum, the shutdown, the refusal to go to school, and try to correct it. But behaviour is communication and information. A child who is anxious, overwhelmed, or grieving doesn’t usually have the language to say so directly. Instead, it comes out sideways: as anger, as withdrawal, as a stomachache on a Monday morning.

This is where the “phase or something more” question gets easier to answer. A phase tends to be short-lived and doesn’t significantly disrupt your child’s daily life. When the struggle is ongoing, intensifying, or getting in the way of school, friendships, sleep, or family life, that’s usually a sign your child could benefit from extra support, whether that’s individual therapy or, when the whole household is affected, family therapy.

How Child Therapy Helps

Child therapy gives kids something many of them don’t have anywhere else: a space that belongs entirely to them, where there’s no pressure to have the right words and no judgment for how they’re feeling.

Because young children don’t always have the vocabulary to talk through their emotions the way adults do, a child therapist uses play, art, storytelling, and gentle conversation to help kids explore what’s going on inside them. Through this process, children learn to identify their emotions, build coping skills, and find healthier ways to manage frustration, sadness, worry, or anger.

Therapy isn’t just about fixing a behaviour. It’s about understanding what’s underneath it, and helping your child feel safe enough to grow past it. Parents are typically included throughout the process too, so you leave with practical tools to support your child at home, not just a weekly appointment on the calendar.

(If your child is a bit older, our teen therapy services follow a similar approach, adjusted for the teenage years.)

FAQs: Phase vs. Something More

How do I know if my child needs therapy or if it’s just a phase?

Look at duration and impact. A phase tends to pass within a few weeks and doesn’t disrupt school, sleep, or relationships. If the struggle is ongoing, getting worse, or affecting daily life, it’s worth talking to a child therapist.

What age can a child start therapy?

At The Relationship Centre, we offer child therapy for ages 4 and up, using play-based and age-appropriate techniques.

Is child anxiety therapy different from general counselling for kids?

Child anxiety therapy focuses specifically on worry-based patterns, like reassurance-seeking, avoidance, or physical symptoms of stress, while general child therapy addresses a broader range of emotional and behavioural concerns. Many children benefit from an approach that blends both. Our therapists in Belleville and Kingston can meet with you and your child to decide the best care plan.

Do you offer child therapy in Kingston and Belleville?

Yes. We offer in-person child therapy in Kingston and Belleville, plus virtual sessions for families across Ontario.
