FAQ's About LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy
What does LGBTQ+ affirming therapy mean?
Affirming therapy means creating a space where you feel respected, valued, and accepted for who you are. At The Relationship Centre, it also means approaching every client with curiosity rather than assumptions. We take the time to understand your unique experiences, relationships, and goals while providing compassionate, evidence-based care that supports your wellbeing.
Do I need to be questioning my identity to benefit from LGBTQ+ therapy?
Not at all. Some people come to therapy to explore identity, while many others seek support for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, grief, work stress, or life transitions. Your identity may be an important part of your story, but it doesn't have to be the reason you're seeking therapy.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ couples?
Yes. We welcome couples of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we help couples strengthen communication, rebuild trust, navigate conflict, and deepen emotional connection.
Can therapy help with family rejection or religious trauma?
Yes. Many LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced rejection, discrimination, or environments where they didn't feel accepted. Therapy provides a safe space to process those experiences, strengthen resilience, and move forward with greater self-compassion and confidence.
Do your therapists have experience working with LGBTQ+ clients?
Yes. Several members of our team have specialized training and experience supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and couples. We also have therapists with lived experience on our team. Most importantly, every therapist is committed to creating an emotionally safe, affirming, and respectful space where clients feel genuinely understood.
What if I've had a negative experience with therapy before?
It's understandable to feel hesitant after a difficult experience. Our therapists recognize that trust takes time to build. We move at your pace, invite honest conversations about what you need, and work collaboratively to create a therapeutic relationship where you feel safe and respected.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is important to us. Therapy sessions are confidential except in the limited situations required by law, which your therapist will explain during your first appointment.
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
Finding the right fit matters. During your free consultation, our Client Care Coordinator will learn more about what you're looking for and recommend a therapist whose experience, approach, and areas of focus align with your goals.
